Drama!

Dear Students,
Sorry for the delay!!! I hope you got familiar with The Hour Glass (W B Yeats). Despite not being contemporary, the play sounds quite applicable to present day life.
Let us have some sort of a forum, if you feel like sharing your opinion!
Post your answer to the following questions:
How is this effect achieved? How would you classify/describe this kind of play? Why?

Now we can say the term is over. Thanks for your sensible company, see you any time, enjoy yourselves and... READ!

2009-I: 2nd Test

Dear Students,
Since our last test was postponed for Tuesday June 30th, I can still reorganise my ideas and revise what I had originally planned for such an event. Still, I can roughly share my present ideas with you. The possible assessment strategies would be:

1.- Matching (prose): comprehensive list of definitions to be matched with a list of literary terms.
2.- Discussion/analysis questions to revise your understanding an ability to apply concepts, ideas, conclussions obtained thru the course.
3.- Literary analysis of a short piece of prose through some guiding questions and under the light of the conclusions we have reached in class.
4.- Excerpts from the stories in your handout so as to check what you remember on a few crucial features of each text.

Remember we still have a class before the test and that we will have a short assessment activity.
Thanks for reading, see you on Friday, enjoy yourselves and... READ!

Presentations on Short Stories

Dear Students,
Your presentations -which were graded!- on the analysis of Pop Music lyrics, were quite a good example of how your proficiency in the analysis and use of literary texts for educational purposes has greatly improved.
Now, let us try to do something similar with units 5 & 6 which deal with short stories. I will be presenting the first 4 stories in unit 5 (Our World: Man & Society) and "Kaleidoscope" (R Bradbury) in unit 6 (Other Worlds: Fantasy & ScF / The human mind) just before you begin presenting yours:
A Maizo: "For the life of Sheila Morgan" (D L McKiernan)
J More: "Fatal Woman" (J Carrol Oates)
V Castellanos: "The Mark on the wall" (V Woolf)

I kind of remember G Princivil selected one story but I can't tell which & R Veracierta was absent. In your case there are 6 stories you can choose from; please, tell us which you decided to pick.
I will soon post some tips that might help you organise your class better, hopefully.

First Test - Description.

Dear students,
We are having our first test on Friday morn. Then we will meet in the classroom rather than the lab. I am convinced you must be prepared for any means used in order to assess your performance in the course so far. Yet, here's a general description of what you will find on the question sheet on Friday. Remember we will be dealing with Poetry and Music (i.e., Lyrics).
Part 1.- Questions on the authors and works in the units we have gone through so far.
Part 2.- Analytical questions in which you must show how you handle terms/concepts and use them to come to conclusions.
Part 3.- Apply your knowledge in the area of poetry so as to analyse a poem.
And... that's it!!!
Just make sure you are there on time, bring your answer sheet and... be ready to make your best!

Sunday 5 April 2009

Now... let us head for the second part!!!

Great! I am glad all 5 of you did manage to post your answer to the question I posed on you. Now, have a new look at what your mates wrote and give your opinion. Do you agree with everyone else? Do you disagree with a specific idea? Is there any correction (language, organisation, content, etc) you'd like to make? Go ahead and shoot!

First activity!

We just read and analysed our first text ("Day Million" by Frederik Pohl) which combines some of the typical features of contemporary short stories. It is Science Fiction in essence and, as such, it takes us to a distant future, 10,000 years ahead! Yet, how is the text related to the present? How does it relate to us, here and now? How would you define reality (as briefly as possible) using this story as a reference point?
Please, answer these questions with short answers. Notice they are basically personal questions, so you can come to ALMOST ANY conclusion, so... pay close attention to the way you answer them. Make sure you use language as effectively as possible.
Post your answers before midnight April 4th. Let us try to give some feed-back (to the group or any specific member during Easter, and let us get ready for discussion on Tuesday April 14th.
Thanks for participating, see you after Easter, enjoy yourselves and... READ!

ps.- Needless to say you have to start reading the first poems in the handout!!!

A new beginning...

Hi, guys! Thanks for registering... even if some of you didn't have any other choice. This is our fourth term together! Sounds like a long time! Hope you have enjoyed reading all the texts we have shared, and I hope you will enjoy this semester even better! Let's get started and keep spirits high till the end of the course! Welcome to the Contemporary Authors Seminar!
